Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”
Adhering to Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

- Free buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.
