While Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Viral Photo Depicts Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ To the Site.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed cracking sounds echoing around the neighbourhood.
“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her trouble had occurred.
While standing on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running towards something that surely every instinct would tell you to run in the opposite direction.
“Without a second thought, but just completely full throttle running.”
A Symbol of Bravery During Crisis
The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of instances of courage in the wake of the tragic event.
Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, law enforcement and medical teams caring for numerous victims.
Local Response and Assistance
Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the location of the incident transforming into a temporary hospital. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, such as entering the water to assist people needing help.
After the events, messages of gratitude circulated widely. One post conveyed appreciation for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over hatred”.
The team of rescuers published a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.
“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness for our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it supports those impacted.”
Local Government Praise
Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the second the violence commenced right into late that evening.
“There have been so many powerful stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a council representative.
“The team demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on Sunday should be celebrated.
“During this time of sorrow and process the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much positivity we have witnessed in the face of such darkness.”
