The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
