The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
