The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
