New York's next mayor states he will live in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, did not confirm he would live there promptly after his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the average income.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
