New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD released surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
