The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
