Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor remarked when questioned about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.
"The future will decide," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has invited attacks from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy disclosed intentions to pull federal funds from the state and suggested eliminating the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," he stated, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that led to three deaths and injured individuals.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was holding back $40m from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration said in a recent comment countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A recently conducted study found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has risen to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of more than 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The idea that a individual who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the American people."
