England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory next summer. His path from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression is incredible. Beginning with his first major job, he established a name for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a structured plan that allows us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach include mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the England collective and avoids language like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

Barry describes himself and the head coach as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not only to stay ahead with developments but to surpass them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“There are 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect all the positives about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely as they do in club games, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, since his group featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those won over and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge took over, within months, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London and back alongside him. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
