The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
