An Expert's 60-Minute Party Plan: Effortless Entertaining for Last-Minute Visitors
Throughout this holiday season, when there is a lot going on that the most energetic people might sometimes long for a calm respite of the new year, it is all too simple to overlook details. I believe I'm not the sole person who has ever felt jolted back to reality at my desk by a text from a friend asking, "What time do you want over tonight?" Fear not; whether you're forgetful, or simply likely to make spontaneous plans, I've got some solutions.
The Key to Great Parties
Above all, though I cannot emphasize it sufficiently, whether you have been planning long in advance or only a short while, the best parties tend to be the most straightforward. What everyone really wants are a good chat, a drink to drink, plus enough to eat so they don't end up gnawing their arm on the bus home. Unless you are a fictional millionaire, nobody expects a full bar, Michelin-starred food and a live band.
The most successful parties tend to be the simplest. However, a concept helps to mask the reality you've just put the party on while coming home from work.
Picking a Style to Guide The Preparations
Still, a theme works well for disguising that you have only thrown the party together on the way home from work. And with a theme, I mean something like the holidays. Going a bit more detailed (Swedish-style festivities, say, with spiced drink, warm beverage, smoked fish and crispbreads, Scandinavian music playlist; or fiesta-style party, including traditional drink, refreshing lagers and tequila drinks, along with lots of tortilla chips, salsa and guacamole, with Luis Miguel in the background) will focus the selection on the necessary supermarket sweep.
Smart Buying to Support The Event
In the store, select a drink or two (an alcoholic option for drinkers, a non-alcoholic one for others prefer not to) and a couple of appetizers that fit the style, and purchase a generous amount as possible, rather than fretting about providing a wide selection. No thing looks as generous and as festive than abundance – I'd always prefer to be welcomed with a tub stocked with iced containers of reasonably priced bubbly than a single glass of swanky bubbly. (Include some bags for chilling, too; there is never plenty of ice.)
Beverages and Punch Streamlined
If you feel the need to demonstrate skills and offer a mixed drink, then mix in advance a big quantity in a jug so that you're not stuck faffing around with drinks while you ought to be having fun. Once the party begins, request a partner or helper to monitor it then refill when needed till it runs out. Apply the same for the alcohol-free option; people appreciate to take on a task while socializing so they can enjoy the positive vibes.
On the punch front, whichever mix you pick (there are many on the internet), steer clear of anything too sweet – any kids there need their own drinks – and if you have one, plonk aromatic bitters nearby (don't add them to the bowl since they're inappropriate for individuals who do not consume alcohol altogether). Make an effort with presentation so that the soft punch doesn't feel neglected; it doesn't take a short time to cut several pieces of citrus into the bowl.
Snacks That Delight Without Effort
Personally, I'd skip the pre-made platters with "party foods" available at grocery stores at this time of year; they seem fussy, and often require turning the oven on (should you do this, remember that everyone secretly likes toasted bread or cocktail sausages regardless). I truly believe it's hard to top two sizable bowls of good-quality snacks (salted pleases everyone), and, assuming no dietary restrictions, a package of great-value packets of nuts available in the South Asian section of supermarkets, and maybe some olives without stones as a garnish (you don't want to discover pits around the house in the future).
If, as my mother says, you think crisps real food, a single big slab of tasty cheese served simply with crackers plus elegantly arranged grapes tends to seem artistic. A serving dish featuring preserved or ready-to-eat salami or salmon displayed there (a single variety, except if money is no object), alternatively a handsome ready-made pastry, like those available in specialty sections during festivities, is more satisfying, and you really won't fail with rustic chunks of Italian bread, since they don't need additional preparation.
